Description

Space is a carrier of meaning, the same with the objects that articulate it. The prerequisite of an “internal relation” between man, space and forms underly not only philosophical and psychological research but theories of the evolution of forms in relation to the evolution of ideas, as well. The inhabitant of a place familiarizes him/herself with the elements which articulate it, in such a degree that they become the sensitized boundaries of his/her bodily figure. On the other hand, forms of art can operate as an “ark” of cultural meaning, by preserving the philosophical foundation of their times in forms and figures. The designer of the spaces of our everyday life as well as the creator of forms of art, both have, under the circumstances, an important mission. Since 18th c. in particular, a number of aesthetic theories have been keen to support their work. The current series of lectures aims at a critical consideration of those theories. Supplementary, we focus on basic matters of general scientific methodology, as the nature of scientific theories, the logic of scientific methodology, scientific change and scientific realism. Particular emphasis is given to the philosophical contemplation on physical space and the space-time continuum. Matters of geometry, topology as well as the non-linear dynamic systems will also be examined here, in relation to architecture.

Learning Outcomes

After the successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:

Give a philosophical interpretation of the built environment, within the field of aesthetics.

Apply theoretical approaches from the field of aesthetics to the field of creation of new forms.

Solve matters of general methodology of sciences which deal with the nature of scientific theories.
